Are there any scholarships out there for teachers in California?
gshephali asked:
I’m a first year intern working with special education at a local elementary in the bay area. I’m having a real hard time paying for classes and all my other bills. I’m not too crazy about loans since I’m still paying them off from college. I always hear about grants and scholarships for teachers, but can’t seem to find any?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Are you still in school? In your second sentence, you speak as if you are in school, but your 3rd sentence makes it seem like you’re done with school.
I’ll go with the assumption you’re still attending….
I learn about teacher scholarships through Fastweb, my school’s teacher education department, and my professional music education organization.
Fastweb takes your info and searches scholarships available for you through your school, and many times those scholarships pop up.
Your education department at your school can help you with this also.
Are you a member of any professional organizations? If so, check their website. Many of them sponsor scholarships and students.
Lastly, you MUST read the fine print of the teacher scholarships. They have requirements and if you break them after you receive the scholarship, legal consequences may occur. Most teacher scholarships I have encountered require the recipient to teach in-state at a suburban school for 5 years after graduation.
